The RTC is loaded with some board-specific data that must be reprogrammed with a ROM burner before a new RTC will be accepted by the game. This appears to be unlike the System 573 hardware where the RTC data will be reinitialized if corrupt on boot. A symptom of this error is the "HARDWARE ERROR(-11P)" message on boot, after all other checks finish.
